This page describes the current beta behavior of Scriptri. It is provided for transparency and is not legal advice.
What is stored on your device
Scriptri stores all of your project data in your browser storage (IndexedDB), on this device only. This includes:
- Projects and their settings
- Scenes, scene titles, and scene content
- Entities (characters, places, objects, factions)
- Entity tags placed in scene text
- State notes and continuity flags
- Local backup snapshots created before destructive actions
This data is not uploaded, synced, or transmitted anywhere during the local beta. It exists only in your browser on this device.
What leaves your device
Your manuscript text, scenes, notes, entities, and project data do not leave your device during the local beta. Scriptri does not send your writing to any server.
The only network activity is loading the application itself from the hosting provider when you visit the site, and sending anonymous usage analytics as described below.
Product analytics
Scriptri uses PostHog to collect anonymous usage analytics during the open beta. This helps us understand whether core features — like manuscript import, entity tagging, and At This Point — are being discovered and used.
What analytics does and does not collect:
- We track anonymous events such as “a project was created” or “an entity tag was added.” We do not track who you are or what you wrote.
- We do not collect manuscript text, scene text, note content, entity names, project names, imported file contents, file names, Scrivener file contents, or Scrivener document titles. None of your writing leaves your device.
- We do not use session recording.
- Events include only safe properties such as counts (e.g., “4 scenes were imported”), boolean flags (e.g., “import succeeded”), and category labels (e.g., entity type was “Character”).
- Analytics uses an anonymous identifier for usage events. It is not linked to your identity, and we do not create user profiles.
- Raw page URLs are not sent. We send only stable screen names (e.g., “project editor”).
Users who prefer to opt out may use a browser-level tracker blocker, which will be respected. An in-app opt-out toggle is planned for a future release.
PostHog is a third-party service subject to PostHog's own privacy policy. Event data is processed in the US.
Hosting and server logs
Scriptri is hosted on a third-party platform (currently Cloudflare). When you load the application, the hosting provider may log standard web request data, including your IP address, browser type, and pages requested. This is typical of any hosted web application.
These logs are controlled by the hosting provider and are subject to their own privacy practices.
External links
This site may include links to external services (for example, a support or donation link). Those services have their own privacy practices. Scriptri does not control or take responsibility for what external sites collect when you visit them. Feedback forms and support links are hosted by third-party services and are governed by their own privacy practices.
Local backups and JSON exports
Scriptri creates automatic local backup snapshots before destructive actions (such as deleting a scene or importing a manuscript). These snapshots are stored in the same browser storage as your project data and do not leave your device.
You can export your full project to a JSON file at any time from the project screen. That file is downloaded to your device and is under your control. Keep a copy somewhere safe. Browser storage is not guaranteed to persist across browser updates, device resets, or data-clearing actions.
Future changes
Cloud sync and optional accounts are on the long-term roadmap but are not part of the current local beta. If a hosted version with cloud storage is introduced, it will be opt-in and announced to current users in advance.
If this privacy page changes in a meaningful way, the date at the top will be updated and, where possible, current users will be notified.
